History of The Name Balian Beach

Balian is actually the name of a river in the village of Lalanglinggah. History of the name of Balian is related to the arrival of a holy priest from Java called Dang Hyang Nirartha, people also called him Danghyang Dwijendra or Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh, he is also the founder of Tanah Lot Temple. In the 15th century, he passed through this place on his sacred journey to visit Bali island via the southern coast of Bali.

It is said that, when he arrived in this place, he found many people who are sick, then with his powers, he stuck a wand in the upstream of the river then ordered those who are sick to bathe in the downstream of the river, then immediately those people are healed. Because of the efficacy of the river in curing disease, the locals call it Balian river.

Balian in Balinese means shaman/healer (which can cure the disease), Balian River has 11 tributaries and the river is considered sacred by the locals, it is still used for ablutions (penglukatan). The waters from Balian river flows directly into the sea, and the downstream of the river is on the shore, it can be concluded that the name of Balian beach is mentioned because the downstream from Balian river are at the beach, then up to now the beach is called and known as Balian beach.

Balian Beach - How to get there?

Balian beach is situated close to the main road that connects between Denpasar and Gilimanuk. Balian Beach can be reached with a distance of approximately 60 km or about 2 hour drive from the city of Denpasar, Kuta or the surrounding area, or about 84 km from the port of Gilimanuk Jembrana, Bali, and around 30 minutes from Medewi beach.

To visit Balian Beach can be reached using buses, taxis, and motorcycles or cars that can be rented on-site vehicle rentals. For tourists who have never visited the beach of Balian, highly recommended to rent a vehicle with driver for your comfort, for safety and to avoid misguided in the way.
